Embryo Transfer

If your mare cannot carry her own foal due to age, lameness or other problems, you don’t want to interrupt her competitive career, or you want more than one foal from her during the breeding season you may wish to use embryo transfer. This is when an early embryo (Day 7 or 8 after ovulation) is recovered from the donor mare and transferred to a recipient mare.

Sharjah Equine Hospital offer embryo recovery, transfer and synchronisation of recipient mares carried out by our experienced reproductive vets. We have a state-of-the-art embryo laboratory with optimum conditions for handling embryos leading to embryo viability and highly successful results. Packages are available so that you know the costs from the onset.

We can also advise you on the suitability of recipient mares that you are thinking of purchasing.

Embryos which are recovered may also be vitrified, a process like freezing, that preserves the embryo in liquid nitrogen until you wish to transfer it to a recipient mare. Please see the section on Embryo Freezing.
